Wedding Speech Etiquette

A great wedding speech is a very personal experience for those at the wedding. What may be an appropriate emotional speech at one wedding may not be a great speech at a fun filled celebration. If you have been asked to make a speech think firstly about the tone of the wedding and adapt your speech to that.

If the wedding is to be a very sombre and pure affair it is probably not a good idea to make loads of wedding speech jokes. Whereas if it is a fun filled wedding with a relaxed atmosphere then some appropriate wedding speech jokes may be received very well.

But there are some critical elements to every wedding speech, these are:

Father of the Bride

Traditionally the father of the bride pays for the wedding so they usually start the speeches.

  • Welcome everyone to the wedding and the groom's parents into the family

  • Say how beautiful the bride looks (you can tell a story about when she was younger)

  • Welcome the groom to the family

  • Offer some advice or words of wisdom about married life (a good place to tell a few jokes)

  • Thank anyone who has made the wedding special (caterers, vicar etc)

  • Propose a toast to the bride and groom

You will then need to introduce the groom to speak.

Groom

You start by welcoming everyone into the family and the guests for attending especially if they have come some distance to attend.

  • thank the bride's parents for raising such a lovely daughter

  • thank people who have made the wedding or reception special

  • say some nice words about the bride

  • propose a toast to the bridesmaids

  • thank the best man and you have the option to say a few brief words about him

You then introduce the Best Man to speak.

Best man

You start by thanking the groom for asking you to be his best man.

  • Tell a few funny stories about the Groom or include some wedding speech jokes. The best man speech is usually the funniest but make sure the jokes are clean and appropriate

  • Compliment the bride and the bridesmaids

  • You can read out a couple of cards from people who were not able to attend (be brief as it can be a bit boring for the audience)

  • Propose a final toast to the bride and groom - wishing them happiness in their life together.

You will need to introduce the next item - usually the cutting of the cake - or thank the audience and invite them to carry on with enjoying themselves.

By following the above structure making your speech should be easy but you can make it more memorable by including some wedding speech jokes.
